| 10 Poker Tips that will get you to the top |
Playing too many hands
Most beginners play way too many hands, I’ve seen many beginners that play every hand no matter what and losing a lot of money on this. Sometimes they get lucky when calling 10xBB with 84 off-suit against AA and the board comes up 844. As this gives them a reward they fool themselves into thinking they made a great play. Instead you should focus on playing good hands, professional players usually give action on 20-30% of the hands. As a beginner you should try to place yourself somewhere between 15-25%.
Learn when to fold
It is very important to be able to fold your hand, beginners tend to overplay their hands and calling every bet that is made. It is usually said that it is when you have the capacity to fold you will start making money.
Choosing your opponents
Most players just choose a random table and sit down. Instead take some time to choose the right table for you. If you have been playing on the same site/network for some time you will surely be familiar with some players and how they play, try choosing tables with players you know you have an advantage over and don’t sit down at a table with a lot of players that usually wins. Also, in the lobby you can usually se statistics on the table like, average pot size, pre-flop ratio and hands hour. If you are an aggressive player you might want to join a table with high pre-flop ratio, the more players that limp in pre-flop the more blinds you will be able to steal. Sorting by average pot you want to join the one with the highest average, it is here where you usually find the craziest players and hitting a decent hand will usually pay you off.
Study your opponents
The best time to study your opponents is when you are not involved in the hand yourself. Most beginners don’t study the game at all when they aren’t involved, this makes them loose a lot of valuable information they otherwise could have used when involved in hand against other players. What you should look after is how much they bet and when they do it, learning other players game is the key to success.
Bet for information
To bet doesn’t necessarily have to mean you have the best hand. Good players use many different methods to collect reads and information from other players. Betting on the flop to see how your opponent reacts is one of those
Try to think as your opponent
Try to put yourself in the opponents seat and ask yourself questions like “Why did he raise that amount?” and “Why did he reraise pre-flop but check on flop?”
Also here are four “levels” to think in when playing, each one harder than the other:
First one is: “What do I have?
Second one is: “What do my opponent have?”
Third one is: “What does my opponent think I have?”
Fourth on is: “What does my opponent think I think he has?”
First one you should have no hassle about, if you do please close this article and go back to school. You should always try to think at the two first levels at least, to third one even better. Fourth one is kind of complex and you probably have to read it at least twice to even get the hang of it.
Learn to bluff and semi-bluff
Bluffing is usually a misunderstood concept, most beginners think the pros are bluffing frequently and try to do the same but the outcome is just total failure. Professional players don’t bluff on random, most of the times they do is because they have a read on another player. A bluff can be very effective if it’s not used that often, getting away with your bluff will be much easier.
Change Gear
If you play the same secure hands and do the same bets all the time some of your opponents will eventually get a grip of your play and use this against you. To avoid this you need to be able to change gear, being unpredictable is one of the things that will make you a good poker player.
Know your position
It’s not only important to play with a strong hand but what might be even more important is to know which position you are in. The best position you can have is when you have the dealer button, this is because you have the advantage to see how all the other players act before it’s your turn. In contrary small blind is the worst position because you have to act first. A hand like 67s is playable from the button but might not be so good if you are on small blind.
Read books and make notes
Player can always learn more if they want to become a better poker player. Make notes on what doesn’t work and what works well and you will eventually find a style of your own while improving your game. Reading poker books are a good source of learning how other players think and pick up this to improve your game.
Thanks for reading, hope you enjoyed!
